The Hawaiian native was involved with ceramics for more than 60 years, from her first job in a commercial production pottery studio during World War II. Her life followed her art, shaped by both Western aesthetics and her Japanese heritage and honed by ceramic studies at the Honolulu Academy of Art, the University of Hawaii, and the Cranbrook Academy.
Takaezu founded the ceramics department in at Princeton University and taught there for 25 years. She joined the faculty of Skidmore's Summer SIX art program in Said Regis Brodie, professor emeritus of art, longtime director of Summer SIX, and a fellow ceramic artist, "She was the first artist I wanted to invite. Toshiko Takaezu () was one of the twentieth century’s greatest abstract artists. Gifted with prodigious drive and vision, she combined inspirations from her own cultural background with currents from contemporary painting and sculpture, arriving at a unique expressionist idiom.
Born in Hawaii to a Japanese émigré family, Takaezu received her early training in ceramics in Honolulu, and then attended Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, when it was an epicenter for adventurous modernism. Already in this early phase in her career, she was able to see correspondences between Abstract Expressionism and the spiritually infused traditions of East Asia, such as calligraphy and tea ceremony. She combined these cross-cultural influences into a powerfully resolved synthesis.
Though made using traditional pottery techniques of wheel-throwing and glazing, the works for which she is best known – the closed forms – are best understood as sculptures, or perhaps as paintings-in-the-round. - Biography
Toshiko Takaezu studied at the University of Hawaii and at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she also taught. She has been on the faculty of other institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Art and Princeton University. Takaezu's ceramics are distinguished by the simplicity of the forms and subtle brush decoration, conveying a sense of tranquility that is related to her Asian heritage. Working with stoneware on the wheel, she prefers a closed, round form, which is shaped off the wheel. Takaezu produces an exceptional range of colors for her glazes, although she has shown a preference for somber cobalt and copper blues, greens, and blacks.
