ERA Meydan Preview
Connections of Starlust believe their three-year-old is capable of ‘a really big run’ in this Friday’s Meydan feature, the Dubai Trophy (Presented by DP World).
The Ralph Beckett trainee is one of six UK contenders in the metre turf dash which was captured 12 months ago by the George Boughey-trained Al Dasim.
Starlust returns to Dubai’s iconic racecourse fresh from a fine UAE debut when runner-up to subsequent G2 winner Star Of Mystery in the Al Wasl Stakes and Alex Cole, Racing Manager to owner Fitri Hay, is confident he is ready to display his best form.
Cole said: “We’re expecting a really big run. This has been his target and he’s in great form. He’s yet to let us down in his nine starts to date.”
The industrious Frost At Dawn, making her fourth start at the Carnival, returns just seven days after finishing third in the Jumeriah Fillies’ Classic last week.
“It’s a bit aggressive running her back a week later, but she’s obviously been showing quite a lot of speed in her races so it was an opportunity to drop her back to metres against three-year-olds,” said trainer William Knight.
“It will be interesting to see how she gets on over a flat
‘UK racing is in a terrible mess – we have been moving most of our horses into America’ – interview with Dr Jim Hay
Glasgow-born owner is chasing Classic success in Britain with Guineas contender Royal Scotsman – but increasingly his focus is overseas, as he tells Laura King
GB: It is rare that you speak to an interviewee so interesting that you don’t want to end the conversation, but that is the case with Dr Jim Hay.
If you don’t immediately know his name that might be because his strong band of racehorses run in the name of his wife Fitri.
However, it is Jim’s lifelong love of the sport which has led to their current seat at racing’s top table – both at home, where Dewhurst runner-up Royal Scotsman is set to carry their pink-and-green silks in the 2, Guineas on Saturday [May 6], and on the international scene, where notable victories have included G1 success in the US.
Born in Glasgow in , year-old Hay isn’t from a racing family and had a Presbyterian upbringing. Instead, a longstanding interest can be attributed to a maths-mad grandmother.
“When I was six or seven my grandmother and I used to watch

Starlust shines in Royal Ascot prep as part of 2, across-the-cards four-timer for Jim and Fitri Hay
Starlust brilliantly warmed up for Royal Ascot next month when making a mockery of his rivals in the 5f handicap with an impressive success.
A Group 3 winner and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last year, Starlust was dropped back into handicap company after disappointing at Ascot last time and sent off the well-backed favourite.
He cruised into contention before stretching clear to win by two and a quarter lengths under Rossa Ryan, and was duly cut to (from 33) for the Commonwealth Cup and the Wokingham Stakes by Betfair Sportsbook.
Ryan told Racing TV: "My biggest problem was getting him to travel in the first two furlongs, but once he got into his proper stride I was then taking him back at the two-furlong pole as he was full of running. There was plenty left in the tank and he's got loads of ability.
"I imagine Ralph [Beckett, trainer] dropped him back to five just to sharpen him up for Ascot and that'll do him the world of good confidence-wise. He's got bundles of speed and put a decent field to bed easily."
