Barrett Robbins, the turn-of-the-century heart of the Oakland Raiders' offensive line, who played with the team in Super Bowl XXXVII and then fell to his own demons.

Barrett Glenn Robbins was born on August 26, in Houston. He grew up in the Sharpstown metropolitan area, once a model of urban planning, and graduated from high school there. Without any special problems and merit, he overcame the next step on the way to the NFL - Texas Christian University. In , the Raiders drafted Robbins in the second round.

After spending a season behind seasoned Dan Turk, Barrett became Oakland's starting center in - just the fifth in nearly forty years of franchise history. Even then, the first signs of impending problems appeared: before the match with Denver, Robbins wandered around the hotel in a state of prostration, found it difficult to navigate in space and was hospitalized. However, from to , he played 78 matches in the Raiders' starting lineup.

Barret Robbins misses the last two games of the season with what the Raiders at first call the flu. The Raiders later change the description to a reaction to flu medication and then change it again to a reaction to depression medication.

Robbins describes his problem as ''a battle within your head. It's not an easy thing to deal with. Anybody who can overcome something like that is bound to be a better person in all aspects of life.''

Robbins' mother and father reportedly have experienced similar symptoms over the years. Robbins also is reported to have had a similar episode before his senior season at Texas Christian University. However, TCU's trainer, Russ Bailey, says that if Robbins had issues with depression while at the school "it didn't happen on my watch." Bailey was TCU's trainer since "Odds are if it were anything big, I'd have known about it," Bailey said. "One thing I do know is he never missed a snap in college."

A Raiders medical staff member says anonymously: ''We're confident his problem is under control. We're fairly certain this will no longer be a problem.''

Greg Papa recalls the last time he saw troubled former Oakland Raiders lineman Barret Robbins as a “surreal experience.”

In , the veteran sportscaster, along with producer Matt Abrams and photographer Steve Uhalde, walked into the Dade Correctional Institution in Florida, where they found themselves in a small, sterile room to interview the man who who infamously missed the Super Bowl after skipping out on the team to party in Tijuana, Mexico.

“I had never been in an active prison before, around inmates,” Papa recalls. “… It was nerve-wracking, and a little scary.”

Robbins, who has been diagnosed as bipolar, landed in prison after a drug-related probation violation. And this was six years after he had been shot three times during a brawl with police in Miami Beach.

The plan was to talk to Robbins, who was released by the Raiders in , in two hour-long sessions over a couple of days. Raiders owner Al Davis had recently died and the interview was pegged to air around the year anniversary of the team’s humiliating 48–21 loss to Jon Gruden’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII.
