Additionally—and controversiallyduring his lifetime—Tardieu wrote what may be the firstmedical or scientific book on childsexual abuse. Far more successful were Tardieu's publications on the terribleworkingconditions of young boys and girls in mines and factories. For example, his study of copperworkers led to a radicalimprovement in theirworking conditions.

In recognition of his first clinical descriptions of battered children, battered child syndrome is also known as Tardieu's syndrome.
Tardieu's ecchymoses, subpleural spots of ecchymosis that follow the death of a newborn child by strangulation or suffocation, were first described by Tardieu in , and were so named in his honor.

Auguste Ambroise Tardieu Tardieu was one of the most prominent figures in 19th century forensic medicine, and a prolific writer in the field of state pharmacology.
Tardieu began his medical studies in Paris, where he received his doctorate in with a dissertation that was long considered a classic. He became agrégé in , médecin des hôpitaux in In he distinguished himself in a concours for the chair of hygiene, but lost to Apollinaire Bouchardat (). On this occasion he published the thesis Voiries et cimetières, which for a long period was considered the most complete monograph in this field.
In , upon the retirement of Nicolas-Philibert Adelon (), Tardieu was appointed professor at the University of Paris. From he was deputy to Pierre François Olive Rayer () as dean of the faculty of medicine.
