Vidyapati, also known by the sobriquet Maithil Kavi Kokil (the poet cuckoo of Maithili), was a Maithili and Sanskrit polymath-poet-saint, playwright, composer, biographer, philosopher, law-theorist, writer, courtier and royal priest. He was a devotee of Shiva, but also wrote love songs and devotional Vaishnava songs. He knew Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Maithili.
Vidyapati's influence was not just restricted to Maithili and Sanskrit literature but also extended to other Eastern Indian literary traditions. The language at the time of Vidyapati, the prakrit-derived late Abahattha, had just begun to transition into early versions of the Eastern language such as Maithili . Thus, Vidyapati's influence on making these languages has been described as "analogous to that of Dante in Italy and Chaucer in England". He has been called the "Father of Bengali literature".

Vidyapati Biography
Vidyapati was a Maithili poet and a Sanskrit writer in the 14th century. He was also known by the name, Maithil Kavi Kokil meaning ‘The poet cuckoo of Maithili’. His noted works are Purusa Pariksa, Gangavakyavali, Bhu-Parikrama, Varsakrtya, Durgabhaktitarangiṇi, Saivasarvasvahara, Kirttipataka, Kirttilata and Likhanabali. His works are regarded as classic and widely influential in centuries to come, both Hindustani and Bengali. He was a noted romantic poet and most known for his love-lyrics as for his poetry dedicated to Shiva as well as the sensuous love story of Radha and Krishna. Vidyapati was a great devotee of Siva and composed many songs to please him. Till now, Siva devotees sing devotional songs of Vidyapati.
According to popular folklore, he was a great devotee of Shiva and Lord Shiva was pleased with him. His prayers to Lord Shiva are still sung in Mithila and best notes for traditionally rich folk songs of this language.
