Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (August 26, – May 8, ), the father of modern chemistry,[1] was a French nobleman prominent in the histories of chemistry, finance, biology, and economics. He stated the first version of the law of conservation of mass,[2] recognized and named oxygen () and hydrogen (), disproved the phlogiston theory, introduced the metric system, wrote the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He was also an investor and administrator of the "Ferme Générale" a private tax collection company; chairman of the board of the Discount Bank (later the Banque de France); and a powerful member of a number of other aristocratic administrative councils. All of these political and economic activities enabled him to fund his scientific research. But because of his prominence in the pre-revolutionary government in France, he was beheaded at the height of the French Revolution.

Biography

Antoine de Lavoisier is one of the 72 scientists whose name is inscribed on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. It is the 9th, on the face facing North.

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier, chemist, physicist, physiologist, agronomist, was born in Paris on August 20, He died beheaded on the scaffold erected on the Place de la Revolution, today Place de la Concorde, May 8, at 5 o'clock in the evening, the fifth of the farmers sentenced, immediately after his father-in-law, Jacques Paulze. He is the creator of modern chemistry, in the sense that it is he who, through his work on oxygen and the composition of the air, has paved the way for all contemporary discoveries. For long ages a science remains latent; a man of genius is coming. That's enough to fertilize her forever. For more than a hundred years, chemistry had been mired in the unfortunate theory of phlogiston, which obscured the path of research of scientists of good will. By explaining the truth, Lavoisier has rendered the greatest of services that an innovator can bring to general

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier was born in Paris in His forebears had done well in the law over several generations and by this time the Lavoisier family was well off. Antoine, who demonstrated great intellectual prowess at an early age, enjoyed the best education that was available in France at that time.

He attended the College Mazarin, the only school in Paris which taught sciences and mathematics as well as literature and history. It was this originality which determined Antoine Lavoisier's destiny to become the founder of modern chemistry.

It had taken a Newton to clear away the massive intellectual barriers, which Aristotle and the medieval scholars had erected through their misunderstanding of the nature of inertia, to reach an understanding of celestial and terrestrial mechanics. Similarly it required a Lavoisier to throw over the phlogiston theory of combustion in order to establish the existence of oxygen, the nature of oxidation processes, (in particular the way in which carbon was oxidised, in combustion, to become carbon dioxide) and the reverse process to oxidation, that of reduction of oxides (metallic oxides particu

Antoine Lavoisier was a French chemist, often referred to as &#;The Father of Modern Chemistry&#; for his influence in bringing the science to an evidence-based, measurement-centric one. He gave names to two important elements: nitrogen and oxygen. Lavoisier was the first man to draw up a lengthy list of elements, allowing him to predict the future discovery of silicon.

Aside from his scientific research, he was an important nobleman, using the income he received from this to pay for his scientific research. He was arrested and eventually executed during the French Revolution, having been accused of selling adulterated tobacco.

Early Life and Work

Lavoisier was born in Paris to a wealthy family; he became rich on a large inheritance from his mother. In , he enrolled at the College Mazarin, studying botany, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy. He left the college in , publishing his first papers on chemistry three years later.
