Nosaka is most noted for “Graves of the Fireflies”. He was versatile and multifaceted: writer, singer, lyricist, actor, and politician. He dedicated his entire life to tackling the theme of war. When he was 15, Japan lost the war. August 15 of was the watershed moment where values literally turned upside down. “Bestial” America became a country we aspired to, English turning into the language of hope from that of the enemy, the emperor becoming a human being.
In this story, the protagonist Toshio and his wife host and entertain her friend the Higginses. He tries to satisfy Higgins with drinks and women. The readers are exposed to the complex feelings Toshio’s generation has towards America. They have so called “the Great American Allergy”. When they were children, they saw huge American soldiers who represented sheer power. They were the ones to whom kids had to succumb. Gradually, Toshio comes to realize why he’s trying that hard to make Mr. Higgins crazy with women or alcohol. “I want to bring him to his knees”. The battle never leaves his generation and traumatic experiences haunt them forever.

Desde la modesta perspectiva de un simple aficionado a la lectura, diré que una de las cualidades que más admiro de un escritor es su capacidad de abordar determinados temas o experiencias vitales (de nuevo hay que tener en cuenta lo mucho que de autobiográfico tienen los textos de Nosaka) desde múltiples perspectivas y tonos, muchas veces valiéndose de la creación de personajes de variopinta condición para lograrlo.
Recordemos que en La tumba de las luciérnagas Nosaka consigue dibujar, mediante el sombrío relato de la lucha por la supervivencia de dos hermanos de corta edad, un crudo panorama de muerte y desolación en un Japón que en agonizaba bajo el peso de las bombas estadounidenses. Juga, menggambarkan kekejaman perang yang pada akhirnya menimbulkan banyak kerugian dan meninggalkan duka yang mendalam.
Novel dan adaptasi filmnya sama-sama bagus. Akan tetapi, versi novel memiliki beberapa point yang lebih mendalam, yang tidak disajikan pada filmnya. Point yang jauh lebih menyakitkan.
Miris sekali dengan berbagai celotehan setsuko dan seita yang polos tentang dunia kejam yang mereka tinggali.
Setelah membaca dan menonton filmnya, akhirnya aku paham kenapa judulnya adalah kuburan kunang-kunang.
