Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter, famous for her beautifully illustrated ‘little books’, fell in love with the Lake District as a child. In later life she moved to the area and eventually integrated into the farming community.

Beatrix Potter’s childhood

Beatrix Potter was born on 28 July in South Kensington, London. She lived a lonely life at home, being educated by a governess and having little contact with other people.
She had many animals which she kept as pets, studying them and making drawings.

Her parents took her on three month summer holidays to Scotland, but when the house they rented became unavailable, they rented Wray Castle near Ambleside in the Lake District. Beatrix was 16 when they first stayed here.

The Potters entertained many eminent guests, including Hardwicke Rawnsley vicar of Low Wray Church, who in was to become one of the founders of the National Trust.

The Reverend Rawnsley’s views on the need to preserve the natural beauty of Lakeland had a lasting effect on the young Beatrix, who had fallen in love with the unspoilt beauty surrounding the holiday home.

Beatrix in , when she was in her mids, and her first love, editor Norman Warne

Beatrix looks up from her writing desk in surprise. The housekeeper has delivered an elegant parcel from Hamleys toy store on London’s Regent Street. ‘Just arrived, Miss Potter.’

‘For me?’ she murmurs, setting down her pen. Hidden in the folds of tissue is a set of exquisite doll’s house furniture, from tiny gilt chairs down to a miniature side of ham. It is an odd choice of gift for a year-old spinster, but evidence of the growing bond between her and her dashing editor Norman Warne.

The love story between Beatrix and Norman is one not just of personal but also of professional admiration. As her editor, he wanted to encourage her work and so, when she told him about her idea for The Tale of Two Bad Mice (which she would also illustrate), he sent her doll’s house furniture so she could copy it. Beatrix, in turn, never forgot to let him know how important these gifts were to

Short bio Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter (28 July  – 22 December )

Beatrix was born in Kensington, London to middle-class, Unitarian parents. Her father, Robert, was a distinguished lawyer, and her mother the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Her parents were also artistic and this artistic talent was passed on to Beatrix.

She spent much of her early life in her own company; she rarely saw her brother Ewan, who was sent to boarding school. Having little social contact with children of her own age, Beatrix began to be drawn into her own world of creating her own stories, based on animals. Beatrix was a naturally gifted artist, and with some art lessons, she also learnt the technical side of drawing. She later wrote:

An artist himself, Rupert Potter () was probably the single greatest influence on his daughter's enduring passion for the arts and natural history and on her development as a writer and illustrator. Closely observed by Beatrix, Rupert assisted Sir John Everett Millais (), a close friend, by photographing backgrounds for paintings and sitters for portraits. Excited by the possibilities of the new art form, Beatrix too became an avid photographer, inheriting one of her father’s old cameras, 'a most inconveniently heavy article which he refuses to use, and which has been breaking my back since I took to that profession' (Journal, Friday 19th April ). Beatrix went on to employ photography
