After the peace accord, Kiir joined the Sudanese army, ultimately becoming a lieutenant colonel. In the second southern rebellion (&#;), he was one of the founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), main southern rebel group, and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the SPLA's political arm, and eventually headed the SPLA forces. Salva Kiir Mayardit is the first and current President of South Sudan. Salva Kiir Mayardit (often referred to as Salva Kiir) was born on September 13th, in Akon, Bahr El Ghazal province, Sudan. His father, Kuethpiny Thiik Atem was a cattle herder. His mother, Awei Rou Wol tong was a farmer. He was born in the Awan clan of the largest southern Sudanese ethnic group the Dinka. He attended the Kojok Primary School in what is today South Sudan.
The large nation of Sudan was diverse with a Muslim, Arab north and a Black African, animist, and Christian south. The southern regions felt underserved by the national government comprised predominantly of northerners. As a young man, he joined the Anyanya, a southern separatist movement, fighting the northern government. This sporadic civil war lasted from to As a result of a peace agreement in many of the southern fighters were absorbed into the Sudanese national army. Mayardit joined the national army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Salva joined the Sudanese Army after the treaty when Dr. John Garang joined an army mutiny he was set to put down in , Kiir and other southern leaders (including Dr. Garang) split from the Sudanese army and joined the Sudanese Rebel Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the second civil war. Mayardit was born in in Qoqrial (also Gogrial) Town, in southern Sudan's Bahr al-Ghazzal province. He was born to the Awan clan of the main southern Sudanese tribe, the Dinka. He attended the Kojok Primary School and eventually, in the late s, joined the Anyanya movement, the antigovernment rebellion of black African animist and Christian forces in southern Sudan against the Muslim Arab-dominated central Sudanese government in the north during the first Sudanese civil war. After the war ended in , Mayardit joined the Sudanese army as an enlisted man.
