Sir William Russell Flintis perhaps the most famous of the watercolour artists working in Britain in the first half of last Century. Was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on April 4, He first attended school at Miss Clinkscales' Seminary at Portobello, advanced to Daniel Stewart's College for Boys in Edinburgh, and later studied at the Royal Institute of Art at Edinburgh. Between and Flint served an apprenticeship as a lithographic artist and designer in a printing house in Edinburgh. He was the son of Francis Wighton Flint, and studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and Heatherley, London. He later joined the staff of Illustrated London News, ( - ), and then served in World War I in the R.N.V.R. and R.A.F.; before devoting the rest of his life to art as a painter, illustrator, medical illustrator and lithographer. The professional work he produced as an artist over many years helped him to achieve the ability to create a unique style that became his forte. The paintings produced were looser and he was able to illustrate with superb professionalism, an array of depths that could give life to architecture and all manner of exotic material, not forgetting his models.
Russell Flint through the medium of his paintings has managed to give, and indeed still does immense enjoyment to thousands of people the world over.
The original watercolour paintings and limited edition signed prints, have now set the benchmark for artists and collectors worldwide, as a superlative excellence in the use of watercolour, and Sir Williams fine paintings are enjoyed by many and regarded amongst the most excellent works on paper to date.

Sir William Russell Flint lived from 4 April to December He was widely recognised to be the finest watercolour artist of his generation and in was knighted for his services to art. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.
William Russell Flint was born in Edinburgh. His father, Francis Wighton Flint, was an illustrator and his mother, Jane Russell Flint, was a civil servant. Flint's artistic talents were recognised early, and he attended the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh, one of the precursors to the Edinburgh College of Art.
In , Flint moved to London to take up a position as a medical illustrator, and he rapidly expanded into illustrations for magazines and commercial designers. Flint joined the Illustrated London News in , which brought his artistic talents to the notice of a much wider audience. In Flint married Sibylle Sueter, who had been introduced to him as a potential model. He became a full time freelance artist in , and in moved with Sibylle to Rome.
