Siddharthan ChandranFRSE FMedSci, is Dean of Clinical Medicine, Head of Edinburgh Medical School, and Director of Edinburgh Neuroscience, Euan MacDonald Centre and Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic.[1][2]

Research[edit]

His research focuses on the discovery and translational arms of regenerative neurology.[3] In partnership with the UCL/MRC Clinical Trials Unit he has conducted multi-arm, multi-stage platform trials for neurodegenerative diseases.[4]

Clinical work[edit]

He founded and directs the Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, the pan-Scotland Euan MacDonald MND Centre and leads Edinburgh’s MS Society Centre of Excellence.[5]

SpeakUnique[edit]

He founded the SpeakUnique voice-banking company, enabling patients with degenerative neurological disease to store recordings of their own voice, so that it can later be used to help them communicate using speech support technology.[6]

    Biography

    Professor Siddharthan Chandran is Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, and an internationally leading expert in neurodegenerative diseases. Prof Chandran is a practising neurologist and scientist working at the forefront of the emerging discipline of Regenerative Neurology, renowned for his work in motor neuron disease (MND) and MS that combines laboratory and clinical research with a particular focus on human / patient stem cells for his discovery science research. Alongside his UK DRI research, Prof Chandran is Director of the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research and the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

    Prof Siddharthan Chandran, an internationally leading expert in neurodegenerative disease, joined the UK Dementia Research Institute as Director and CEO in October Siddharthan is a practising neurologist and scientist working at the forefront of the emerging discipline of Regenerative Neurology, renowned for his work in motor neuron disease (MND) and MS that combines laboratory and clinical research with a particular focus on human / patient stem cells for his discovery science research.     Professor Siddharthan Chandran, a world-leading expert in neurodegenerative diseases, will become the new Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), based at UCL, from 1 October

    The UK DRI is the single biggest investment the UK has ever made in dementia, primarily supported by the Medical Research Council, and charity funders Alzheimer’s Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society. It is headquartered at UCL, with a research centre based within the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

    Professor Chandran is a clinician-scientist at the forefront of the emerging discipline of Regenerative Neurology. He is renowned for his pioneering work in motor neuron and neurodegenerative disease research – work that bridges the gap between the laboratory and the clinic. He is currently a Group Leader at the UK DRI at the University of Edinburgh and will move his laboratory to UCL’s new world-leading centre for neuroscience on Grays Inn Road.
