Ottawa shooting: Gunman killed after attack on Canadian parliament; soldier shot dead at war memorial
Security forces are on alert across Canada after a gunman attacked the nation's parliament, shooting a soldier dead before himself being killed by a parliamentary official.
Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper declared that the nation would "never be intimidated" and said the soldier, who was standing on ceremonial guard duty outside the nation's main war memorial in Ottawa, had been "murdered in cold blood".
The gunman has been identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Muslim convert who was born Michael Joseph Hall, who reportedly fought in Libya during the uprising which deposed strongman Moamar Gaddafi.
He was shot dead by the parliament's sergeant-at-arms, who has been hailed a hero by MPs who were caught in the building as dozens of shots were fired.

The violence began about am Wednesday (local time) when a soldier Nathan Cirillo, a year-old reservist serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada regiment, was shot in the chest with a rifle as he stood on guard.

David Bathurst learned from a reporter that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, someone he attended mosque with about three years ago, was the man behind the deadly attack in the nation&#;s capital.

&#;Just a brief stint&#; for about a couple of days, Bathurst told Global News.
They saw each other regularly back then, for the three to four months Zehaf-Bibeau attended the Masjid al-Salaam and Education Center — a mosque in Burnaby, B.C. — but the two men drifted apart over time.
The last time Bathurst saw Zehaf-Bibeau was in August, when they crossed paths at Masjid al-Salaam.

Like many who know someone accused of such a brazen attack, Bathurst was completely shocked when he heard his former acquaintance was blamed for the murder of year-old Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was shot while on guard at the National War Memorial.
