Seymour Cray
Seymour R. Cray ( - ), American electronics engineer and computer designer who was the preeminent designer of the large high-speed computers known as supercomputers.
Studies and his Research Career
Cray graduated from the University of Minnesota in with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He began his career at Engineering Research Associates (ERA), a leading digital computer company. In , when ERA was taken over in a series of corporate mergers, Cray left to help found Control Data Corp., which became a major computer manufacturer. There Cray led the design of the CDC , one of the first computers to replace vacuum tubes with smaller transistors. He later helped create the CDC , which, at the time of its debut in , was the fastest computer in the world, able to execute three million floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). The CDC gave rise to the term supercomputer.
In Cray left Control Data and founded his own firm, Cray Research Inc., with the intention of building the fastest computers in the world. This was largely realized through his innovative design of uniprocessor computers, which allowed simultaneous (parallel) processing. His compan

Seymour Cray: The Father of Supercomputers
Early Life and Military ServiceBorn in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in , Seymour Cray developed an early interest in science and engineering, inspired by his father, a civil engineer. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a radio operator. Serving in both Europe and the Pacific, he worked on deciphering Japanese messages.
Career at ERA and Remington Rand
In , Cray began his engineering career at Engineering Research Associates (ERA), a company that developed cryptographic equipment for the U.S. Navy. While at ERA, he designed his first computer, the ERA (). In , ERA was acquired by Remington Rand, which had previously acquired Eckert-Mauchly C

Seymour Cray
Seymour Cray (–) is a legendary USA engineer and supercomputer architect who designed a series of computers, that were the fastest in the world for decades. Sometimes recognized as the Father of Supercomputing, Cray has been credited with creating the supercomputer industry. How does this story start?
After his 2-years service in the US Army during WWII, Seymour Cray, a native of Chippewa Falls, a small town in Wisconsin, returned to the United States in and enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated in with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics in
Still in the University, in , Cray joined a new local company—Engineering Research Associates (ERA) in Saint Paul, Minnesota, which built specialized cryptographic equipment for the US Navy. While in ERA, he worked with a gamut of computer technologies, ranging from vacuum tubes and magnetic amplifiers to transistors. It was here that he quickly came to be regarded as an expert on digital computer technology, especially follow
