Biography

Artist and educator Ron Robertson-Swann is best known for his abstract metal sculptures, often painted in bright colours, including Vault, one of the most talked-about artworks in Australian history.

Born in Sydney in , he studied sculpture at the East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) from to The following year he left for Europe and in began a post-graduate course in sculpture at St Martins School of Art in London, where he was taught by the renowned sculptors Anthony Caro and Phillip King, who were leading a move towards abstraction and experimenting with colour as well as new methods and materials, particularly steel. He also worked, like Caro and King before him, as an assistant to Henry Moore, perhaps the pre-eminent British sculptor of the 20th century.

Robertson-Swann taught at St Martins from then at East Ham Technical College from to and at Goldsmith’s College at the University of London in With limited resources to create his own steel sculptures, Robertson-Swann focused much of his production during this period on painting, after encountering the work of Morris Louis; painting would remain a significant part of

Formalist Sculptor Ron Robertson-Swann OAM studied under Lyndon Dadswell at the National Art School, Sydney () and Sir Anthony Caro OM and Phillip King CBE, at the St Martins School of Art, London, England (). Robertson-Swann was the Head of Sculpture at the National Art School and is the artistic adviser to the popular annual exhibition Sculpture by the Sea, of which his work is a recurrent fixture. He was a founding member of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council and has held solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane and at several regional galleries. His work has been included in group exhibitions including ‘Tracking the Field’ at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in , ‘Federation, Australian Art Society ’ at the National Gallery of Australia in , and internationally in Denmark and Japan. Robertson-Swann has completed several significant public commissions at locations including the Queensland Cultural Centre, Brisbane and has won numerous awards including the Comalco Invitational Sculpture Award, the Bathurst Prize and the Alice Prize. His work is held by a number of public and private collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Ron Robertson-Swann archive at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as assembled by the artist and is his main archival collection, documenting his life and art from the time of his earliest exhibitions. Ron Robertson-Swann OAM was born in Sydney Australia in

For over 50 years, Robertson-Swann has been actively involved in the arts in Australia as a sculptor, teacher, mentor and advocate. He studied sculpture with Lyndon Dadswell at the National Art School, Sydney and with Sir Anthony Caro OM CBE and Phillip King CBE at St. Martin’s School of Art in London in , and later was an assistant to Henry Moore for several years.

Returning to Australia, Robertson-Swann appeared in “The Field” exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in , a herald of international art in Australia. His achievement include: exhibiting at the inaugural Sydney Biennale in ; a founding member of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council; recipient of a Australia Council, Visual Arts Board Grant in ; Head of Sculpture Department at the Canberra School of Art - ; artistic adviser to David Handley from the outset of Sculpture by the Sea in ; Board member of Sculpture by the Sea - ; and Head of Sculpture at the National Art School in Sydney from , a position he recently retired from.
