LaVere Redfield (October 29, – September 6, ) was an American investor, businessman, land owner, numismatist, roulette player, and philanthropist from Reno, Nevada.[1]
Redfield was born in Ogden, Utah. His mother, Sarah Eleanor Browning, was an Ogden native, and her father was Jonathan Browning, a blacksmith and gunsmith whose family would found the famed Browning Arms Company in Utah in LaVere's father, William Sheldon Redfield, was born in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, in William Sheldon Redfield's parents had been members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; but shortly after William`s birth they, along with other dissenters, formed a splinter sect called the “Cutleries.” LaVere Redfield attended the public Ogden High School where he was a member of the Cadet Battalion, a kind of Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) or

LaVere Redfield was a prolific hoarder. When he died in , his estate was estimated at more than $70 million. Born in Ogden, Utah. Married to Nell. Speculator in real estate and stocks. He lived on an 80 square mile estate nearf Reno, Nevada. He had a reputation for being thrifty. Convicted of tax evasion in and served 18 months in prison. His wealth was estimated at $ million at the time of his death.
His house was burglarized on February 29, , with the gang of thieves apprehended shortly thereafter. While investigating, the FBI discovered evidence of tax evasion which they turned orer to the IRS for prosecution.
Redfield accumulated a hoard of , silver dollars. They were acquired from local banks at face value. However, he distrusted banks and kept the hoard in bags in his basement. The hoard was acquired by A-Mark for million dollars in This was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as highest price paid for a coin collection.

On October 11, , the Oneida County Hospital began doing business as the Nell J. Redfield Memorial Hospital. The name change was made to honor the Redfield family, especially Nell Jones Redfield, who have generously supported the Hospital through the years.
Nell Jones grew up in Malad and made frequent trips back to her hometown after her marriage to LaVere Redfield. They lived in southern California until when they moved to Reno, Nevada, which had become a haven for millionaires trying to avoid paying state taxes. Nevada did not have state taxes.
As one of the original real estate developers and business/casino owners of Reno, LaVere Redfield amassed a large fortune. After LaVere’s death in and having no children, his wife Nell established a charitable foundation that focuses on education, health care, needy women and children, and care for the homeless poor, among other causes. The Redfield Foundation primarily awards grants to Northern Nevada communities, including the University of Nevada-Reno, but the exception has been Malad, which has been the beneficiary of Nell’s love for her hometown.
