„Der Zeichner Finsternis“ ist die Geschichte des jährigen Christian Cage der als Außenseiter in der kleinen Stadt Winter in Wisconsin lebt. Er ist ein begabter Maler und Zeichner doch bringt ihm diese Gabe im Laufe des Buches jede Menge Ärger ein. Seine Mitschüler halten ihn für gestört und für einen Mörder weil eine seiner Lehrerinnen Selbstmord begangen hat und in ihrem Abschiedsbrief geschrieben hat, er wäre Schuld daran.
Seine Eltern sind verschwunden als er noch ganz klein war und seither lebt er bei seinem Onkel Hank, dem Sheriff der Stadt. Seine Tante Jean ist durch einen Autounfall umgekommen und Christian glaubt auch daran Schuld zu sein, weil er kurz zuvor einen Streit mit ihr hatte.
