John Dargan Hollingsworth, Jr., was a private man.
Profoundly secretive, he lived alone in a trailer near his factory, shunned publicity and insisted on remaining anonymous when he made contributions. Forbes Magazine, in an article on the wealthiest Americans in the s had called him “a mean miser.”
After he died in December of , the announcement of his massive legacy to Greenville was a stunning surprise. Although he had a daughter, his entire estate, worth perhaps a half a billion dollars, was a legacy to local charities.
Furman University, which he had attended for one year in the s, received 45 percent of the income; the Greenville YMCA got 10 percent; and other Greenville charities — to be selected annually by the Board of the J.D. Hollingsworth Fund — would divide the remaining 45 percent.
His holdings included about $ million in real estate (he “bought big and never sold”), as well as the profits from his textile inventions and work with carding machines through J.D. Hollingsworth on Wheels, a textile repair company he inherited from his father.

The HOLLINGSWORTH company was established before the turn of the twentieth century by Mr. Pinckney C. Hollingsworth. It was a one-man operation with a mule-drawn machine shop on wheels that traveled to cotton mills in the Carolinas to perform repairs on textile machinery.
Mr. Pinckney Hollingsworth's son, Mr. John D. Hollingsworth, Sr., continued the business of traveling from mill to mill making repairs to textile machinery. He used the trade name "J. D. Hollingsworth by Himself."
In about , to assist him in his mobile repair work, Mr. Hollingsworth, Sr., bought a new model Signal truck, which had a 4-cylinder Red Seal Continental engine with Bendix magneto and solid rubber tires.
In the mid 's, Mr. Hollingsworth built a large garage-workshop at the rear of his house, and in a few years, it was enlarged.
From a very early age, John D. Hollingsworth, Jr., traveled with his father, and together they worked toward making improvements with every succeeding job they performed. At that point, the company's trade name became "J. D. Hollingsworth & Son on Wheels."
