Griffiths Mxenge was a courageous attorney who became a significant threat to the ruling white government when he began practicing law in Durban from He and his wife Victoria successfully defended black political activists in Apartheid courts and became leading figures in mass campaigns against some of the racist regimes most repressive laws.

Mlungisi Griffiths Mxenge was born in in King Williams Town. He was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) from the mids when he was a BA student at the University of Fort Hare. He later studied for an LLB degree at the University of Natal.

His LLB studies were interrupted when he was convicted of being a member of the ANC (after it was banned in ) and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on Robben Island. Griffiths Mxenge, affectionately known as GM to his friends, was born on 27 February in Rayi Village. The latter is a small village hidden from the national road to Grahamstown, about five kilometers from King William’s Town.
