Date Masamune (伊達政宗)

Masamune DATE (September 5, - June 27, ) was a feudal warlord who lived during the Sengoku period. He was a feudal lord with the territories including Dewa Province (Ushu) and Mutsu Province (Oshu). He was the first lord of Sendai Domain in Mutsu Province.

His original family name was Fujiwara of the Fujiwara clan. His family lineage originated from the Date clan of Tomomune DATE as an ancestor. Masamune DATE was a legitimate son of the 16th lord, Terumune DATE and Yoshihime, a daughter of Yoshimori MOGAMI (a younger sister of Yoshiaki MOGAMI). His childhood name was Bontenmaru, name commonly used was Tojiro, and a posthumous name was Teizan. He was given the god title as Takefuruhikonomikoto, and enshrined at the Aoba-jinjya Shrine.

He contracted smallpox in his youth, and lost his eyesight of the right eye. He was known as one of the most prominent cultured person during the Sengoku period, while he preferred grand and flamboyant styles. Sendai Castle Honmaru, situated on a river terrace of the Hirosegawa River at the foothill of Mt. Aoba in the western part of urban area of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, is believed to have been constructed by Date Masamune in Protected by natural fortifications, with Mt. Aoba to the west, Tatsunokuchi Gorge to the south, and cliffs overlooking the Hirosegawa River to the east, it served as the political and military base of the Sendai-han domain until the Meiji Restoration. While the structures at the castle area such as Honmaru (the first enclosure) were eventually demolished, the stone walls and reconstructed side turrets that stand today serve as a poignant reminder of its historical significance. The area encompassing the castle ruins has been preserved as Aobayama Park, featuring a statue of Masamune on horseback. The popular warlord from Azuchi-Momoyama (last part of the Sengoku period) through early Edo period, Date Masamune was made all the more iconic for his missing eye, called “One-Eyed Dragon (独眼竜, Dokuganryu)”.  Masamune has significantly influenced the History of Japan, and particularly the Tohoku region, as the 17th head of the Date clan.  He was an outstanding tactician, and a founder of the modern-day city of Sendai.  Well-known for his eye-patch and fearsome crescent moon kabuto (helmet) which may have inspire George Lucas to create the famous helmet of Darth Vader, the main antagonist of the first Star Wars trilogy, and the Dokuganryu has been a mainstay in Japanese pop culture.  What made Masamune especially famous was the Taiga Drama (histrical period drama) broadcasted by NHK, that Ken Watanabe, who is a worldwide famous actor today, played the role of Date Masamune in.  The drama telling the life of Masamune became a huge hit in entire Japan.  Masamune
