Faxian
Faxian; (Fa-hsien) (traditional Chinese: 法顯; simplified Chinese: 法显; pinyin: Fǎxiǎn; also romanized as Fa-Hien, Fa-hsien, Fa Xian, et al.) ( – c. CE) was a ChineseBuddhistmonk who traveled by foot all the way from China to India, visiting many sacredBuddhist sites in what are now Xinjiang, China, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and between and to acquire Buddhist scriptures. His journey is described in his important travelogue, A Record of BuddhistKingdoms, Being an Account by the ChineseMonkFa-Xian of his Travels in India and Ceylon in Search of the BuddhistBooks of Discipline.
He visited India during the reign of Chandragupta II and is most known for his pilgrimage to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha in modernNepal. Faxian claimed that demons and dragons were the original inhabitants of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).[1]

Faxian was a Chinese Buddhist monk and translator who traveled by foot from Ancient China to Ancient India, visiting many sacred Buddhist sites in Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia between to acquire Buddhist texts. A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms (also is known as Faxian's Account), and also called Fu-Kuo-Ki, Being an Account by the Chinese Monk Fa-Xian of his Travels in India and Ceylon. Other transliterations of his name include Fa-Hien, and Fa-hsien.
He visited India in the early fifth century. He entered India from the northwest and reached Pataliputra. He saw the ruins of the city when he reached Pataliputra. Faxian's visit to India occurred during the reign of Chandragupta II. He is also renowned for his pilgrimage to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha (modern Nepal). Fa Hien’s Visit to India
Fa Hien visited India during the reign of Chandragupta II, one of the most important rulers of the Gupta Empire. Even though Faxian visited India during such an important king, he left behind a very small record of Chandragupta’s reign. This was because he devoted most of his time to exploring Buddhist religious sites and collecting texts and scripts of Buddhism.
- He visited Patliputra, which was the seat of the Gupta Empire during the time of Chandragupta II. He wrote about Chandragupta as a very kind and generous king who worked for the welfare of his people.
- Chandragupta II used to run a number of charitable institutions, free health services, and rest houses for merchants and travellers.
- Fa Hien, in his recordings, used to mention Magadha as Central India. This could have been because Magadha province's towns were the largest in the Indo-Gangetic Plains.
- From Fa Hien's writings, historians have concluded that the ruler did not set unrealistic restrictions on the masses. There was minimal interference in people's lives, and overall, people were free to live as they wished.
