Yeondoo Jung: One Hundred Years of Travels
ArtReview caught up with the artist to discuss the latest iteration of the annual MMCA Hyundai Motor Series
Initiated in , the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series is an annual programme hosted by the MMCA in Seoul, that offers Korean artists a major platform on which to showcase ambitious, and often challenging new work. This year’s awardee is Yeondoo Jung, whose work spans photography, video, installation and performance, and has previously featured in both the Taipei, Venice, Gwangju, Istanbul and Liverpool Biennials, as well as numerous solo exhibitions wordwide. His project for the Hyundai programme focuses on a particular story of the often-overlooked Korean diaspora, relating to indentured labourers who set sail for Yucatán, Mexico during the early twentieth century. The exhibition features five works focusing on connection, separation and adaptation that provides a narrative that talks about the past, the present, and what might be to come. ArtReview caught up with the artist to discuss the show.

년 파리의 시청 앞에는 베트남에서 배를 타고 바다를 건너온 소위 보트피플(Boat People)이라고 불리는 난민들이 모여있었다. 시청의 공무원들이 작은 여비를 그들 손에 쥐여줬고, 그 여비로 모두 RER (파리 국철) 기차에 올라타 다 같이 내린 역이 톨시(Torcy)역이었다. 지금도 톨시에는 베트남 사람들이 많이 모여 살고 있다.
나는 이 이야기를 처음 접했을 당시 그들이 망망대해에 떠있는 배 위에서 자기의 앞으로의 삶이 어떻게 되리라 상상했었는지 궁금했다. 이 작품은 년 파리 MAC/VAL 맥발 미술관에서 체재하며 만든 작품으로 미술관이 있던 발데망 지역은 우리가 흔히 아는 파리의 모습과는 달리 수많은 이민자들이 살고 있는 지역이었다. <여기와 저기 사이>는 지금 타지를 살고 있는 이민자들과 그들의 과거의 기억 속 타지에서의 삶에 대한 기대를 작품화 한 것이다. 레이어로 콜라주 되어있는 사진 뒤로 그들의 목소리가 흘러나오고, 이 곳에 오기 전에 어떤 상상을 했었는지 섬세하게 층층이 배열된 사진이 깊이를 더하며 그들의 내면의 이야기에 귀를 기울이게 된다.

年韓国・チンジュ(晋州)生まれ。ソウルを拠点に活動。ソウル国立大学卒業後、年ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス・カレッジ修士課程修了。
「ヴェネチアビエンナーレ」や「上海ビエンナーレ」、「ソウル・メディアシティ・ビエンナーレ」といった国際的な場で作品を発表。近年はUlsan Art Museum(韓国・ウルサン(蔚山))やTotal Museum of Contemporary Art（ソウル）で個展を開催。これまでに「上海ビエンナーレ」における「Asia Europe Culture Foundation Award」のほか、「Artist of the Year 」（韓国国立現代美術館(MMCA)）、年の「Today’s Young Artist Award」（韓国文化観光部）を受賞。彼の作品は ニューヨーク近代美術館(MoMA)やSt. Louis Art Museum、韓国国立現代美術館(MMCA)に所蔵されている。
