Phlegm biography
Phlegm is a world-known cartoonist and illustrator from Wales. He is also well known for his self-published comics and highly creative street art. Phlegm’s work is distinctively detailed composed of odd figures and a narrative structure. His work inspires greatness and is even often inspired by graffiti where Phlegm transforms run down urban spaces and factories.
The name Phlegm came from one of the four bodily humours in ancient Greek medicine: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Phlegm was believed to be responsible for an apathetic and unemotional temperament.

The majority of Phlegm’s artwork is strictly illustration-based. He leaves his street artwork and murals for his cartoon-based art. In fact, that majority of his large characters originate from his comics and they are often spray painted onto very large walls. Phlegm prefers to paint his comic work with black Indian ink and a dip pen. He uses color only when he is screen-printing or painting large murals and other objects.

Who is Phlegm?
Phlegm's real identity remains as mysterious as his artwork, with the artist preferring to stay out of the spotlight. Originally hailing from North Wales, he moved to Sheffield in the late s, which is where he began his artistic journey. Phlegm the street artist made his mark in the independent comic book industry before transitioning to street art, where he took inspiration from the world around him, infusing it into his unique style.

We caught up with Sheffield based artist Phlegmlast Friday after the artist had completed work on his latest mural on the walls of the Southbank centre (covered here).With photos of the finished work taken we headed up to the urban garden on the upper level of the building where Hookedblog got a sneak preview of the artist's long awaited self published book of first heard about this book earlier in the year while watching Phlegm painting the large Village Underground wall (covered here) in East London and know this project has been a real labour of love for the artist, so we were super excited to get a look inside the finished comic.
For those of you who have previously bought the artists self-published fanzines such as the Illuminated Alphabet Zine (covered here) you will have an idea of the standards to expect from this new publication. Once again Phlegm has crafted another beautiful comic with hand screen printed covers as well as hand embossing each and every one of the book edition.
