Cabinet 7: T.E. Lawrence

On 16 November , at a dinner party at All Souls, Oxford, Graves first met T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence knew and liked Graves’s poetry, and they became fast friends. Indeed, Graves dedicated his poetry book The Pier-Glass to Lawrence, and relied on the ‘legendary hero’ for ‘careful amendments’ towards Lawrence and the Arabs, a commissioned biography that was completed by Graves in a mere ten weeks.

Jonathan Cape and Graves were no doubt delighted with sales; it sold 15, copies in advance in November After reading Basil Liddell Hart’s biography on Lawrence, Graves wrote to him:

‘I like your book a lot. You write from a very different angle, and the information T. E. gave you was from a very different angle.’

On Lawrence’s death they collaborated to produce the publication on display.

Robert Graves (–)

Robert Graves was born in in Wimbledon to Alfred Perceval Graves, a man of letters and school inspector of Anglo-Irish and Scots descent, and Amalia von Ranke, the niece of the great German historian Leopold von Ranke. In his autobiography Goodbye to All That (), Graves describes early visits to his German cousins’ estate, and recounts his unhappy years at Charterhouse School, where he first became involved in writing and editing poetry. At school he also won cups for boxing, and over the course of holidays spent at Harlech in North Wales he developed an interest in mountain climbing.

When war was declared in August , Graves enlisted immediately, despite having secured an exhibition to St John’s College, Oxford. This meant that he went straight from school into the Royal Welch Fusiliers. In Goodbye to All That he records his respect for the history of the regiment and its superb discipline, as well as his discomfort at having secured a comm

Lawrence and the Arabs

July 20,
A couple of weeks ago, I had what was probably my seventh viewing of the movie, "Lawrence of Arabia." While I am drawn to the story (and the cinematography that is jaw-dropping), my main fascination has always been the portrayal of the title character by Peter O'Toole. The mental and emotional journey of Lawrence is so intriguing to me that it brings me back to the film again and again. I've wondered how much of what I saw regarding personality and mental state of Lawrence was factual, and how much was invented.

In LAWRENCE AND THE ARABS, I found exactly the book to answer that. It is written by Robert Graves who had so impressed me with his books, I,CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD. At the time of his writing this book, he had known T.E. Lawrence for 7-years. Knowing that publishing houses were interested in his story, Lawrence asked Graves to write it. Graves let it be known right up front that some of what he would include would be based on his own knowledge, and that some of the content might not meet with his subject's approval. Lawrence thought that a "reinterpretation" by someone else would likely be much more desultory and "epic." So, Grave
