Ken Hamilton has enlisted the values of both the Dutch and Italian Renaissance painters of the 15th and 16th centuries, ever since his training at the University of Ulster Belfast. He has rejected the trends of so-called contemporary art and sought to restore some of the ancient values of painting now discarded by so many. It was here where he also delved into the study of the techniques, mediums and pigments employed so frequently by these masters. Light and shadow play a crucial role in creating highly realistic and almost idealised figures. A classical beauty is created with the use of traditional ochres and umbers, and this classical beauty is ultimately modernised with the inclusion of soft blush tones and golds. The use of gold, especially in his works entitled "La Reine De Saba" and "New Horizons" echoes Byzantine icons, capturing on canvas the same wonderful lustre of a mosaic. 'Quiet elegance' can describe the work of Ken Hamilton. A sense of wonder and questioning radiates from his work, as if his figures are lost in a maze of inward contemplation or thought. This same stillness appears to be drawn from the work of Dutch master, Johannes Vermeer. Hamilton himself d
ABOUT THE ARTIST
KEN C. HAMILTON'S versatility in watercolor defines his artistry although he has also worked widely in other mediums. “I think it’s just something about the way the pigment interacts on paper that you can’t achieve in any other medium. Informal, yet easily identifiable, it can depict the subject while remaining elusive. I am fascinated with the relationship of portraying the likeness and spirit of the subject while still allowing for the paints’ ability to take on a life of its own.”
Growing up in Spokane, Washington, Ken spent many an hour looking over his father’s shoulder, an accomplished artist who had received a number of commissions. Ken’s talent for drawing was apparent at an early age, being offered his first commission at age 12 when a friend paid him forty cents to paint the sea battle, Monitor and the Merrimac. The friend’s mother was surprised that he would actually charge her son for the painting!
Following high school, Ken first attended Spokane Falls College and received a three year Professional Art Diploma. It was there where he heard the

Ken Hamilton (b)
Not unlike some of the Old Masters from the High Renaissance period, Hamilton's paintings - many of which are pictures or portraits of the female form - do not attempt to bare the artist's own soul, but instead celebrate the visual pleasure of the human form. Joy rather than despair is the underlying motif.
In , at the th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA), Ken Hamilton won the Award for the "Most Popular Work" of the show (as voted for by visitors to the Exhibition) with his painting "Leaving the Citadel in the Afternoon".
With so many contemporary artists turning away from the academic tradition of fine art in favour of ever more 'modern' types of self-expression, Ken Hamilton's exquisite paintings help to recapture the magic of the Renaissance, and remind us of the graceful forms of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.
