Training and Artistic Career
Little is known of Honthorst's early life, except that he was born in Utrecht, the son of a painter of tapestry cartoons. He trained in the studio of Abraham Bloemaert (), a Dutch painter, engraver and printmaker. Bloemaert was one of the original Haarlem Mannerism school but changed his style with the advent of the Baroque style. It is believed that Honthorst travelled to Rome between and there was introduced to the works of early Italian Baroque artists like Caravaggio, Guido Reni (&#;) and Jacopo Bassano (). He painted many religious works in Rome, including Christ Before the High Priest (National Gallery, London) and fresco paintings for churches including the S. Maria della Scala. However, these themes found little popularity outside of Italy.

He stayed in Rome until and then returned to Utrecht. In Italy his style of Baroque painting attracted the patronage of the aristocracy and he continued to court royal circles on his return home. Of great interest still, though rather sharp in outline and hard in modelling, are Honthorst's portraits of the Duke of Buckingham and Family (Hampton Court), the King and Queen of Bohemia (Hanover and Combe Abbey), Marie de Medici (Amsterdam town-hall), , the Stadtholders and their Wives (Amsterdam and Hague), Charles Louis and Rupert, Charles I's nephews (Louvre, St Petersburg, Combe Abbey and Willin), and Lord Craven, (National Portrait Gallery, London).
Honthorst's early form may be judged by a Lute-player () at the Louvre, the Martyrdom of St John in S. M. della Scala at Rome, or the Liberation of Peter in the Berlin Museum; his latest style is that of the House in the Wood (), where he appears to disadvantage by the side of Jordaens and others.
Honthorst was succeeded by his brother William, born at Utrecht in , who died, it is said, in William lived chiefly in his native place, temporarily at Berlin. Gerard van Honthorst (Gerrit van Honthorst) (4 November – 27 April ) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who became known for his depiction of artificially lit scenes, eventually receiving the nickname Gherardo delle Notti ("Gerard of the nights"). Early in his career he visited Rome, where he had great success painting in a style influenced by Caravaggio. Following his return to the Netherlands he became a leading portrait painter.

Having completed his education, Honthorst went to Italy, where he is first recorded in He was one the artists from Utrecht who went to Rome at around this time, all of whom were to be deeply influenced by the recent art they encountered there. Gerrit van Honthorst () was the son of a tapestry designer. He trained in the studio of Abraham Bloemaert () and must have attended the academy for life drawing in Rome in the s, where he refined his candle-light technique under the influence of Caravaggio (). He became a member of the Utrecht Guild of St Luke in and turned from mainly religious to Arcadian and domestic subjects and portraits. He worked for prestigious patrons such as King Charles I, Prince Frederick Henry of Orange and Price Christian IV of Denmark.
