Born in Manly and raised on Sydney’s northern beaches, Pheloung was an R&B guitarist before discovering classical music through Bach. After moving to London in his teens, he spent much of his career in the UK, composing music for the opening of the Millennium Dome and frequently called on to write music for major TV series including Daziel and Pascoe and The Politician’s Wife. His film scores include Hilary and Jackie, which tells the story of cellist Jacqueline du Pré. He also contributed music to the Sydney Opera House’s twentieth birthday celebrations.
He is best known, though, for his ambitious, dark soundtracks to the Inspector Morse series. Pheloung shared the detective’s passion for opera and cryptic crosswords, and often wove references to the killer into his music through morse code. “I enjoy a pint at the pub and I certainly love chess and of course the cryptic crossword, although Morse does The Times and I do The Guardian,” reflected Pheloung in one interview.
