Jacques Attali, famous French economist, writer and political advisor, presents a rich and varied genealogy. Born on November 1, in Algiers, Algeria, Attali is the son of Albert Attali, a stonemason of Algerian-Jewish origin, and Simonne Levy, a seamstress of Jewish-Spanish origin. The Attali family has deep roots in North Africa, where they resided for generations. During the Second World War and under the Vichy regime, the family survived the torments of the German occupation and anti-Semitic persecution by hiding underground. After the war, Jacques Attali continued his life in mainland France.

In he was appointed special adviser to President Mitterrand and in that capacity was influential on both internal and foreign issues and was sent on several highly confidential missions. In addition to being an economist (he holds a Ph.D. in economics among many other high-level degrees from prestigious French academic institutions), he is a philosopher and has written a number of works which include Analyse économique de la vie politique (), Modèles politiques (), L'Anti-économique (), La parole et l'Outil (), La Nouvelle economie française (), and Les Trois Mondes ().
